Social Media 101 for Parents (Free course)

Covering key topics all parents need to know to negotiate the social media world their children use.

This is a FREE course of some of the key areas parents need to know when they start to actively work with their children to understand the social media world their children inhabit.

Topics covered are below and resources for parents are provided with each topic.

  1. Decoding the language children use when communicating with each other online (ie Code9 = parents are watching)
  2. Monitoring options and Social Media contracts
  3. Laws children (and parents) need to know in regard to creating and sharing content online
  4. Emergency situations and cyber bullying - recognising the warning signs and what to do in these situations
  5. Phone settings and YouTube. How to set up your child's phone to restrict access to certain content, and managing access to content on YouTube (which is quickly replacing TV as the main source of content to watch for children)

The topics covered will provide parents with the start they need to understand the social media maze, and will provide a foundation to build upon with the courses we are creating on each Social Media app and online games, so parents really start to understand what their children are using, and can make informed decisions on how to keep their children safe.

As an experienced social media specialist, I’ve worked with many organisations and businesses to help them gain a greater understanding on social media to grow their business, raise brand awareness and engage with their clients.

However, in the last year I’ve started to notice just how many clients were now asking questions about other platforms that aren’t typically business apps, like Snapchat and Specifically around how their children are using these apps and what should they as a parent be doing about it. They’re eager to learn what risks or dangers they should look out for, should they even let their kids use these platforms, and frequently the conversation ended up with the age-old cry of frustration around ‘how on earth do I even use this app?!’

I get it, I’m no stranger to managing technology and kids, I have two children, a teenager and a tweenager.

I wanted a place that parents could go to be informed and armed with the tools required to support their children online, hence Code9 Parent was developed, as a resource for parents to gain the knowledge and insights to actively support their children on Social Media.
